COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Canterbury: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Kent 420 & 135, Essex 279 & 48-1 Kent 8pts, Essex 5pts Match scorecard
Carter recorded his first five-wicket haul since joining Essex |
A disastrous day for Kent allowed Essex back into their County Championship match at Canterbury. With Essex stranded on 194-6 overnight, still 226 runs behind, former Kent seamer David Masters blasted 42 runs to avoid the follow-on. Kent then collapsed to 135-all out, only James Tredwell (40) making a challenging score. Essex lost Mark Pettini early on but reached stumps on 48-1, 229 runs adrift with nine wickets remaining. Masters began the Essex counter-attack in the morning, scoring eight quick boundaries against his old club. Kent's openers Rob Key and Joe Denly were then both quickly dismissed through catches by wicketkeeper James Foster off the bowling of Andy Carter (5-40), on loan from Nottinghamshire. Carter continued to dominate with support from Matt Walker (3-35) and Masters (2-34) as Kent's second innings was over inside 48 overs, setting the visitors a target of 277. Despite losing in-form Pettini for four, Essex eased to stumps without further alarm.
