Lee Daggett took four wickets as Northants hauled themselves back into contention with Worcestershire on day two at New Road.

By stumps the hosts had slipped to 72-8 in their second innings, a lead of 201.

Earlier Northants needed a ninth-wicket stand of 43 between David Murphy and David Lucas to get them to 158 all out.

Matt Mason and Alan Richardson each took three wickets to give the home side a first-innings lead of 129, before Northants redressed the balance.

Resuming on 3-1 in reply to Worcestershire's 287, Northants were soon in trouble at 16-1 before debutant Rob Newton (23) and Alex Wakely (20) led a fightback of sorts.

But both fell to James Cameron and, after Elton Chigumbura edged a rising delivery from Matt Mason to wicketkeeper Ben Cox and Andrew Hall was run out, Northants needed Murphy and Lucas to drag them past the follow-on mark.

In was then the turn of Worcestershire to struggle on a seaming pitch as Daggett removed Daryl Mitchell - brilliantly caught by James Middlebrook at point - Vikram Solanki, David Wheeldon and Moeen Ali.

When Shakib Al Hasan played on off Lucas, Worcestershire were rocking at 43-5, before Alex Kervezee (24) and Cameron combined to take the score to 70.

But with the light fading, Hall accounted for Kervezee and Middlesbrook's off-spin did for Cameron and Cox to leave the game on a knife edge.
