Fifteen wickets fell on day one at Cheltenham as honours ended even between Gloucestershire and Glamorgan.

After the visitors were asked to bat under cloudy skies, they were soon in trouble at 104-7.

Mark Wallace (72) and Robert Croft (44) fought back, before Gemaal Hussain (4-57) mopped up the tail to see Glamorgan bowled out for 216.

But Huw Waters and Jim Allenby took two wickets each to help reduce the hosts to 145-5 at stumps, a deficit of 71.

Home captain Alex Gidman's decision to ask Glamorgan to bat on a green-tinged pitch paid off as Gloucestershire's seam attack of Hussain, Jon Lewis, Steve Kirby and James Franklin put the visitors in deep trouble.

But Wallace and Croft led a spirited recovery, carrying the fight to the hosts in a 19-over stand that was ended when Wallace edged Hussain to second slip.

After the Glamorgan innings was wrapped up, Gloucestershire openers Will Porterfield (41) and Jon Batty (18) shared a first-wicket stand of 55.

Both departed in quick succession, Batty pinned lbw by Allenby and Porterfield caught behind off Waters.

Allenby then accounted for Gidman and Gloucestershire's earlier domination was further undermined when Hamish Marshall hit a Dean Cosker long-hop to deep mid-wicket and Waters removed Chris Taylor's off stump.
