Middlesex claimed late wickets on day three at Uxbridge to leave their match with Sussex hanging in the balance.

After the hosts resumed on 127-2, they were bowled out for 350, a deficit of 102, with Corey Collymore taking 4-66.

But Middlesex roared back into the game with Steve Finn and Toby Roland-Jones each taking two wickets to reduce Sussex to 65-4.

Murray Goodwin (35) resisted, but he fell to Neil Dexter to leave Sussex 109-5 at stumps, a lead of 211.

Middlesex lost wicketkeeper John Simpson to Collymore without adding to his overnight 58 but then saw Eoin Morgan (58) and Dawid Malan add 103 for the fourth wicket.

Malan was bowled attempting to slog-sweep Monty Panesar, after which Sussex were only held up by Dexter (43) and Gareth Berg (26).

With such a large first-innings lead, the visitors would have been hoping to bat Middlesex out of the game but were in trouble when Roland-Jones persuaded Mike Yardy to play on and had Matt Prior caught behind, either side of Finn accounting for Chris Nash and Ed Joyce.

Goodwin looked to have weathered the storm in a fourth-wicket stand of 40 with Michael Thornley, but was trapped lbw by Dexter to leave the match on a knife-edge.
