CLYDESDALE BANK 40, Canterbury: Hampshire 238-7 (40 overs) beat Kent 236-4 (40 overs) by two runs Match scorecard
Denly faced 109 balls for his unbeaten 102, hitting eight fours and one six
A century from Joe Denly proved in vain as Hampshire held on to defeat Kent by two runs in the CB 40 at Canterbury.
After being put in to bat, Hampshire reached 238-7 with Michael Lumb (50) top-scoring and James Tredwell and Matt Coles each taking three wickets.
Kent looked well-placed after a second-wicket stand of 136 between Denly (102 not out) and Martin van Jaarsveld 73.
But after skipper van Jaarsveld fell to Danny Briggs, Dominic Cork (3-56) helped restrict Kent to 236-4.
Hampshire started slowly as openers Lumb and Jimmy Adams (20) struggled to time the ball.
However, after Adams was dismissed, Lumb accelerated and struck his half-century in 54 balls before being smartly stumped off the bowling of Tredwell.
Late contributions from Neil Mackenzie (40) and Michael Carberry (46) helped Hampshire reach a defendable total.
Kent looked to be racing to their target while van Jaarsveld and Denly occupied the crease.
However, the dismissals of Geraint Jones and Darren Stevens slowed the run rate, leaving Denly and former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood (25 not out) too much to do in the final over.
