A 119-run partnership between Ed Joyce and Luke Wright helped Sussex to a 159-run win over Worcestershire in their Clydesdale Bank 40 match at Hove. Joyce smacked 117 from 91 balls while Wright made 95 from 76 deliveries as the home side posted a formidable 313-6 from their 40 overs. The visitors were 44-0 in reply before slumping to 95-8, with only Shaaiq Choudhry's 39 delaying the inevitable. James Kirtley grabbed 3-33 while Monty Panesar took 2-11 from his eight overs. | 606: DEBATE |
Panesar's suffocating bowling proved to be the catalyst for the visitors' collapse as they suffered their heaviest-ever limited-overs loss, excluding Twenty20 matches, and their sixth in a row in this season's 40-over competition. The former England spinner took the wickets of James Cameron, with one that nipped in between bat and pad, and teenager Ben Cox, who was flummoxed by a straight delivery with extra bounce. Kirtley caused damage to the top order. He clean bowled Vikram Solanki before removing fellow opener Jack Manuel thanks to a smart catch by Michael Yardy. Earlier, Jack Shantry was the pick of the Worcestershire bowlers, taking 3-54 from eight overs. A crushing win was the perfect send-off for Sussex all-rounder Robin Martin-Jenkins, who is retiring from first-class cricket after 16 years with the county.
