Warwickshire secured top spot in the FP t20 North Group and a home quarter-final against Hampshire, with an eight-run victory over Leicestershire. Darren Maddy's unbeaten 41 off 29 balls helped the visitors post 137-7, as Australian Brad Hodge took 2-23 and Claude Henderson 2-21. Chris Woakes and Keith Barker then took two wickets each as the home side fell short on 129-6. James Taylor (29) top scored for the hosts, who were already out. Leicestershire finish seventh in the group and four points behind Northants, who claimed the final quarter-final place. | 606: DEBATE |
It was the men from Grace Road's seventh home defeat in the FP t20 this season, but at the half-way stage they were in with a shout of downing the Bears. Warwickshire fell to 27-2 as England's Jonathan Trott failed with the bat, but Jim Troughton's 26 off 25 balls kept the scoreboard ticking over. Maddy upped the run rate with sixes off Henderson, James Benning and Nadeem Malik, while Chris Woakes chipped in with 18 off eight balls to move the Bears' total to 137-7. But Leicestershire were never up with the rate needed after the early loss of opener Jacques Du Toit, even though Hodge's 22 off 16 balls gave them some hope. The Australian's departure saw the innings crawl along with no boundaries for ten overs, pushing the required rate up to 11 an over. Barker ended Leicestershire's slim hopes by taking two wickets in an over, dismissing first Taylor and then clean bowling Wayne White.
