FRIENDS PROVIDENT t20, Old Trafford: Derbyshire 163-6 (20 ovs) beat Lancashire 156-6 (20 ovs) by seven runs Match scorecard
Groenewald joined Derbyshire from Warwickshire in 2008 |
Tim Groenewald took three wickets to stifle Lancashire and set Derbyshire on the way to a seven-run Friends Provident t20 win at Old Trafford. After Groenewald had removed Stephen Moore (21), Tom Smith and Steven Croft (both 38) looked to have the hosts on course for their target of 164. But after Smith was run out, Groenewald accounted for Croft and Paul Horton as Lancashire fell short on 156-6. Earlier, Robin Peterson's 11-ball 26 propelled Derbyshire to 163-6. Wes Durston (39) shared an opening stand of 64 with Loots Bosman (29), but the visitors needed Peterson to carry them to what would prove to be a winning score after Lancashire spinners Nathan McCullum and Simon Kerrigan conceded just 35 runs in their combined eight overs. Moore hit three fours in his 12-ball effort and, after he was bowled by Groenewald, a second-wicket stand of 61 between Smith and Croft left Lancashire well placed for victory. But, with Smith having departed, Groenewald removed Croft and Horton in the space of three balls to leave the hosts struggling at 119-4. Lancashire needed 37 from the final four overs, but the target was out of their reach.
