COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Chelmsford: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Essex 154, Nottinghamshire 126-5 Essex 1pt, Notts 3pts Match scorecard
Notts captain Chris Read took six catches in the Essex first innings |
Nottinghamshire ended day one of their match against Essex in the ascendancy after 15 wickets fell at Chelmsford. The home side needed an unbeaten 46 from Tim Phillips to drag them to 154 all out, with Charlie Shreck and Paul Franks each claiming three scalps. The visitors then slid to 72-5 with Maurice Chambers picking up three wickets and Phillips two. But captain Chris Read (31 no) and Ali Brown (30 no) shared an unbroken stand of 54 to take Notts to 126-5 at stumps. Read had earlier lost the toss but saw the Essex batting crumble after John Maunders was run out attempting a single with just seven on the board. | 606: DEBATE |
Shreck (3-40), Franks (3-20) and Andre Adams (2-26) reduced the hosts to 84-7 before Phillips, who was supported by David Masters (20) and last man Chambers (14), put up some resistance. Chambers and Phillips then combined with the ball to put Notts on the back foot. Paceman Chambers swung the ball with hostility to remove openers Alex Hales and Bilal Shafayat before left-arm spinner Phillips accounted for Mark Wagh and Samit Patel. When Chambers trapped Steven Mullaney leg before Notts were looking likely to concede a first-innings lead, but Read, who took six catches in the Essex innings, and Brown wrestled back the initiative.
