COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, New Road: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Worcestershire 175, Leicestershire 163-3 Worcs 1pt, Leics 3pts Match scorecard

Leicestershire took control on day one of their County Championship clash at New Road as Worcestershire were bowled out for 175. The visitors will look to build a decent lead having reached 163-3 in reply by close of play on Monday. Worcestershire were only rescued by an unbeaten 53 from Gareth Andrew and 42 from teenage wicketkeeper Ben Cox. Will Jefferson (64) and Jacques du Toit (57) put on a 107 for the second wicket as the Foxes seized the initiative. The 71-run partnership from Andrew and Cox was Worcestershire's only real bright spot on an otherwise frustrating day. And Cox's score of 42 was even more impressive given that he was making his first Championship appearance since completing his A-level exams six days ago. Leicestershire seamer Nadeem Malik made his first four-day appearance for 21 months against one of his former sides, claiming 2-50 from 12 overs.
BBC Hereford & Worcester's Trevor Owens on a tough day for Worcestershire: "After winning the toss, clearly it would have been disappointing for Worcestershire to make only 175. "Gareth Andrew did well in making an unbeaten half-century in which his partnership of 71 with Ben Cox helped add some respectability to the total. "Leicestershire bowled well as a unit and then their batsmen backed this up with half-centuries from Will Jefferson and Jacques du Toit to ensure the visitors are well in control. "Credit to Worcestershire who took two wickets late in the day but they will need to make quick inroads early on the second day if they are to get themselves back into this one."
