Moeen has made 196 runs in Twenty20 cricket this summer

Moeen Ali starred with bat and ball but could not prevent Derbyshire sealing a six-wicket Friends Provident t20 win over Worcestershire at Derby.

After the visitors lost star batsmen Phil Jacques and Sanath Jayasuriya cheaply, Moeen stepped up to the plate hitting 67 to help his side to 127-7.

He then took two wickets in an over as the hosts stumbled from 53-0 to 62-3.

But Garry Park (41 not out) and Robin Peterson (24) shared 64 for the fourth wicket as Derbyshire got home on 128-4.

Moeen was in as early as the second ball of the match after Jacques chopped the first from Charl Langeveldt onto his stumps.

And he shared partnerships of 40 with both Alexei Kervezee and Jack Manuel on the way to equalling his best Twenty20 score to help give his side something to defend.

But although his capture of Loots Bosman, caught on the boundary by Jack Shantry for 34, and home captain Greg Smith, trapped leg before, in the space of five balls put the brakes on Derbyshire, Smith and Peterson hit the accelerator at just the right time to ensure the hosts got home with four balls to spare.

Derbyshire's victory lifted them to third in the North Group, behind second-placed Warwickshire only on net run rate, while Worcestershire remain rooted to the bottom after a fifth straight defeat.

Worcestershire's Moeen Ali told BBC Hereford and Worcester:
"It's a big shame we lost, I played well but I would've felt much better if we had won.

"We fought hard there towards the end and there's a little bit of positive to come out of it.

"We just couldn't get that partnership and that momentum going and thought it was a 145 wicket.

"We fought well in the end with bowling and fielding, but we were 15 to 20 runs short."
