Sussex dodged the rain to take control over Division Two strugglers Derbyshire at Derby. Resuming on 371-8, the visitors were eventually bowled out for 429 after Yasir Arafat (34 no) and James Anyon (34) added 64 for the ninth wicket. In reply, Derbyshire fell from 103-1 to 127-4 after Chris Rogers went for 79. Chesney Hughes (62) and Dan Redfern (44) launched a fight back, but Luke Wright accounted for both men to leave Derbyshire 244-6 at stumps, 185 behind. The second-morning partnership between Arafat and Anyon helped to take the total added by the last four Sussex wickets up to 303 before Arafat followed up his knock by trapping Wayne Madsen lbw. Rogers was put down on 15 by wicketkeeper Ben Brown off Anyon and made the most of his chance to add 96 for the second wicket with Garry Park (24). The stand was ended when Park was well caught at second slip by Ed Joyce off the bowling of Robin Martin-Jenkins before Monty Panesar removed Greg Smith and Rogers to leave the hosts in the mire. With Derbyshire needing 280 to avoid the follow-on, youngsters Hughes, who has now passed 50 four times in his first four Championship games, and Redfern batted with great composure to edge towards the target. But Wright dismissed them both in the space of three overs with Hughes trapped lbw playing slightly across the line and Redfern bowled playing on the back foot.
