COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, The Oval: Leicestershire 479 beat Surrey 236 and 183 by an innings and 60 runs Leics 23pts, Surrey 2pts Match scorecard
Naik had never before taken a first-class five-wicket haul |
Off-spinner Jigar Naik took his best first-class figures as Leicestershire beat Division Two bottom side Surrey inside three days the The Oval. Resuming on 160-6 and needing 170 runs to avoid the follow-on, Surrey slipped to 236 all out with Claude Henderson finishing with figures of 6-84. They fared no better in their second innings, subsiding to 183 all out despite Younus Khan's unbeaten 77. Naik picked up 7-96 as Leicestershire triumphed by an innings and 60 runs. Even allowing for a pitch offering considerable help to the visiting spin pair of Naik and Henderson, the manner of Surrey's defeat, the first Championship defeat to Leicestershire since 1998, is alarming. | 606: DEBATE |
In deep trouble at the start of the day, Surrey at least managed to pass the 200-mark thanks to a seventh-wicket stand of 45 between Usman Afzaal (54) and Chris Schofield (29). But, when Schofield was trapped leg before offering no shot to Henderson, the hosts lost their last four wickets for 34 runs. Following-on, Surrey lost Steven Davies, lbw to a swinging delivery from Nathan Buck, before a gritty stand of 41 between Arun Harinath and Mark Ramprakash gave the home side some hope of taking the match into the final day. But Naik and Henderson then combined to take the remaining nine wickets and send Surrey to a defeat that would have been even more emphatic had it not been for an entertaining last-wicket stand of 46 between Younus and Jade Dernbach.
