COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Edgbaston: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Warwickshire 140, Somerset 268 & 151-8 Warwicks 3pts Somerset 5pts Match scorecard
Kartik took 6-61 when the two sides met earlier this season in Tauton |
Warwickshire produced a stirring fight back against Somerset, in the face of a fifth straight Championship defeat, after they endured another collapse. Bowled out for a first-innings total of under 150 for the fourth match in succession, they hit back with the aid of leg spinner Imran Tahir's 4-43. The tricky Edgbaston pitch proved fruitful for seamers and spinners as 17 wickets fell on the day. Left-armer Murali Kartik took 5-30 as the Bears folded for just 140 runs. Warwickshire walked out on 2-1 and were soon down to 74-4 due to the pace trio of Ben Phillips, Alfonso Thomas and Charl Willoughby. Kartik then took the next five wickets in a row. Chris Woakes ensured the home side avoided the follow-on with his knock of 21 but they were still 128 behind when the last wicket fell. However Woakes began the fight back when he trapped Marcus Trescothick lbw in the opening over and then dismissed Jos Buttler in similar fashion in the second. Seamers Andrew Miller and Rikki Clarke provided able support for Woakes as only Phillips' attacking play with the bat brought any rewards of note as he top scored for the day with 44 not out.
