Matthew Walker's unbeaten knock of 60 provided hope for Essex in their match against Hampshire after they ended the second day on 209-7, chasing 300.

James Tomlinson finished on 3-51 as the hosts' bowlers took the advantage at the Rose Bowl.

Hampshire could add only two runs to their overnight total as Maurice Chambers skittled out the remaining three batsmen to end on 5-49.

Essex faltered in response with only Walker offering genuine resistance.
