Essex celebrate picking up the wicket of Lancashire's Paul Horton at Old Trafford
Essex bowled Lancashire out for just 184 on day two of their County Championship clash at Old Trafford. The hosts had to rely on Sajid Mahmood's run-a-ball 58 to avoid the follow-on, with Mark Chilton's 49 the only other innings of note. Essex had earlier seen Grant Flower (36no) and David Masters (33) take their overnight 251-6 to 307, home spinner Simon Kerrigan claiming 6-74. The visitors then reached 26-1 in their second innings by stumps, 149 ahead. Essex had their hosts at 101-7 at the end of the 37th over as their batting order, hampered by a sickness to opener Stephen Moore who came at number six, never looked steady. | 606: DEBATE |
But the day started well for the Red Rose county as Kerrigan helped finish off the Essex innings with career-best figures. He took three wickets in eight balls to ensure a third bowling point for his side and, when he took two wickets in the 110th over to leave Essex on 299-9, denied the visitors a bonus point of their own. But Maurice Chambers soon spoiled the party as he dismissed Luke Sutton and Ashwell Prince cheaply. Ten Doeschate saw Paul Horton (19) caught in the gully by Ravi Bopara and then had Moore caught behind. Steven Croft fell lbw to Chris Wright before David Masters had skipper Glen Chapple (10) caught behind by James Foster. Danish Kaneria trapped Mark Chilton lbw when he was one run shy of his half century. Bopara ran out Kyle Hogg (7) from the covers and produced a diving catch at mid-wicket to dismiss Kerrigan off Kaneria.
