LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Taunton: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY THREE: Yorkshire 405 & 154-2, Somerset 377 Yorkshire 4 pts, Somerset 3 pts Match scorecard
Adam Lyth has now hit 622 runs in six first-class matches this season |
Yorkshire opener Adam Lyth's hopes of a second century in the match were ended in the final over of the day by Indian slow left-arm spinner Murali Kartik. Having bowled out Somerset for 377 to earn a first-innings lead of 28, the Tykes set about creating a big enough lead to warrant a last-day declaration. But Lyth, who made a career-best 142 in Yorkshire in the first innings, was trapped sweeping leg before for 93. That left title-chasing Yorkshire on 154-2 at the close, with a lead of 182. Lyth's 93 off 170 balls, including nine fours, makes him this season's leading scorer in Division One, with 622 runs at an average of 62. Somerset had earlier been bowled out for 377, Arul Suppiah falling one short of a hundred and Jos Buttler scoring 52. Adil Rashid claimed 4-85, while David Wainwright weighed in with 3-48. But, while the pitch is offering some slow turn, it will need to change significantly in nature for either side to force a win on the final day. In the corresponding fixture last season Somerset successfully chased a target of 476, so Yorkshire captain Jacques Rudolph, who played in that game, is unlikely to be thinking in terms of any generous declaration.
