Amjad Khan has played one Test match for England
Defending champions Durham were bowled out for just 121 by Division One bottom side Kent on day one at the Riverside.
After the home side won the toss, only four of their batsmen reached double figures as pacemen Amjad Khan (5-43) and Makhaya Ntini (4-53) ran amok.
Kent struggled in reply, initially slipping to 152-6.
But Darren Stevens (99 not out) received good support from Matt Coles (34) to take Kent to 305-8 at the close, a lead of 184.
Stevens missed Kent's defeat by Durham at Canterbury last week, but made his mark by plundering 11 fours and three sixes in his 106-ball effort after being dropped by Chris Rushworth at mid-off while on just 17.
His stand of 94 with Coles rescued Kent from a collapse which saw them lose six wickets for 81 runs, thanks to two wickets each for Liam Plunkett, Steve Harmison and Mitch Claydon.
Prior to that Harmison had conceded 63 runs in his opening seven overs, but none of Rob Key (40), Martin van Jaarsveld (36), Joe Denly (24) or Geraint Jones (21) could build on the starts they made.
Earlier, Durham were reduced to 78-8 at lunch after winning the toss as Amjad and Ntini, who bowled his 17 overs unchanged, made the most of the assistance available.
The home side's misery would then be compounded later in the day as Ben Stokes joined their lengthy injury list after spraining his ankle in the field.
Kent batsman Darren Stevens told BBC Radio Kent: "We couldn't believe it when we came in at lunch and we only needed two wickets.
"The boys bowled a little bit wide for the first 20 minutes or so but it was a pitch where there was plenty in there if you hit the right areas. But they bowled brilliantly.
"It's great to get us into a great position. My only thought was to get us to 150 to 200 to 250 and now we've got 300 on the board so I'm pleased with the way I'm playing.
"But they're a good side, they've got good depth and experience in their side so if we can get their key players out then we'll say we can win the game but I think we'll look to get as many runs as we can in the morning and then see what happens when we bowl again."
