Gloucestershire edged to a seven-run win over Group B bottom club Northants in the Clydesdale Bank 40 at Bristol.

Batting first, the home side could only muster 192-9 from their 40 overs, thanks mainly to 61 from Alex Gidman and 41 from Steven Snell.

Northants slipped to 84-5 in reply, but looked to be put on track by David Sales and Andrew Hall (37).

But, when Hall fell, Northants faltered and Sales was left unbeaten on 59 as his side fell short on 185-7.

Gloucestershire's win, their third in four games, leaves them two points behind Group B leaders Yorkshire, while Northants have now lost all their first four fixtures.

Gloucestershire spinner Vikram Banerjee told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:

"It gripped a little bit and it was just a little bit too pacy, so it was quite hard to hit through the line.

"We felt taking pace off the ball was the way forward and it was a great dogfight for us.

"Our score was about par, so we knew we had to bowl and field really well and everyone chipped in and did their job."
