LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, The Rose Bowl: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY THREE: Hampshire 512, Somerset 441-6 Somerset 7 pts, Hampshire 6 pts Match scorecard
Jos Buttler's previous highest first-class score was 36 against Essex in April |
Somerset teenager Jos Buttler hit his maiden first-class century as the bat again dominated at The Rose Bowl. Resuming on 104-3, Buttler was one of two Somerset centurions, Jimmy Hildreth also hitting a ton as the visitors made 441-6 by the close to trail by 71 runs. Buttler, playing only because of Craig Kieswetter's absence, was 105 not out at stumps, following Hildreth's 106 as only four wickets fell in the day. Hampshire paceman David Griffiths finished the day with figures of 4-94. The dismissals of Marcus Trescothick and Arul Suppiah in the final session of Tuesday's play had Hampshire scenting a first win of the season. But Zander de Bruyn was the only wicket to fall before lunch when his off stump was uprooted by Griffiths. And England Under-19 international Buttler shared a fifth-wicket stand of 105 with Hildreth to hold together the Somerset middle order just when Hampshire a collapse appeared to be a possibility. Hildreth was dropped on 57 at slip by Neil McKenzie off Liam Dawson, but he progressed to his highest score of the season, eclipsing his 99 against Lancashire last week, Hildreth lasted until the third over after tea as he was removed cutting a short Griffiths' delivery to James Tomlinson on the boundary, but Buttler showed great maturity to keep the runs flowing.
