Nottinghamshire's Hashim Amla puts Durham on rack

LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Trent Bridge:

Match scorecard

Hashim Amla
Amla has failed to pass 50 only once in six Championship innings for Notts

Hashim Amla's fourth Championship half-century of the season helped put Nottinghamshire in a handy position on day two of their clash with Durham.

The South Africa Test batsman hit 14 boundaries in his 67 to dominate a third-wicket stand of 88 with Mark Wagh (44no) as Notts closed on 191-3.

That is just 27 behind Durham who, from 79-3 overnight, slumped to 218 all out.

Dale Benkenstein, Ian Blackwell, Ben Stokes and Phil Mustard all passed 30 for the champions but failed to go on.

Blackwell had added 19 to his overnight 24 before he was the first wicket of the day to fall, edging an attempted drive off Darren Pattinson to gully.

Benkenstein followed three overs later, bowled by a Charlie Shreck inswinger, before Stokes and Mustard added a valuable 59 for the sixth wicket.

Their resistance was broken when Samit Patel had Stokes stumped to spark a rush of three wickets in 16 balls.

Mustard edged Paul Franks (3-38) to wicketkeeper Chris Read and Liam Plunkett gave short leg a bat-pad catch off Patel, with Notts going on to mop up the Durham tail swiftly after lunch.

The champions had Steve Harmison leading their attack for the first time this summer because of a persistent back injury, but the former England paceman struggled.

Instead, it was Plunkett who made Durham's initial two breakthroughs, trapping Bilal Shafayat leg before in his first over before enticing Neil Edwards to play on.

But Amla then took centre stage, passing 50 for the fifth time in six Championship innings for Notts, only to edge Ben Harmison behind to Mustard late in the day.
