Mitchell gives Worcestershire control over Derbyshire
LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, New Road: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Worcestershire 376-3 Worcs 4pts, Derbys 1pt Match scorecard
Mitchell had previously managed 194 runs from eight innings this season
Daryl Mitchell hit his first Championship hundred of the season as Worcestershire dominated day one against Derbyshire at New Road.
Mitchell (148) hit 17 fours and shared an opening stand of 167 with Australian Phil Jacques (92).
It was a welcome knock for Jacques, who had failed to score in five of his last six first-class innings.
Alex Kervezee (66 not out) and Vikram Solanki (42) also chipped in as the hosts closed on 376-3.
After Worcestershire won the toss, Mitchell and Jacques added the county's highest opening stand since Jacques and Stephen Moore put on 234 against Surrey in 2007.
They were separated 10 overs into the afternoon session when Jacques dragged a short ball from Tom Lungley on to his stumps.
Mitchell continued to accumulate and reached his sixth first-class century from the third ball after tea.
He shared a second-wicket stand of 66 with Solanki, but the Worcestershire captain was run out by Tim Groenewald after being sent back by Mitchell.
In the next over, Kervezee survived a chance to Garry Park at silly point off the bowling of Robin Peterson.
It would prove to be costly, as the Netherlands international and the Worcestershire vice-captain added 114 before Mitchell was bowled attempting to cut Peterson.
