A five-wicket haul from James Tomlinson helped Hampshire bowl Division One leaders Nottinghamshire out for 270 on day one at Trent Bridge.

Tomlinson (5-66) and Dominic Cork (2-43) worked well in tandem early on to reduce the home side to 29-4.

Steven Mullaney (97) and Ali Brown (42) hauled Notts back towards respectability before Paul Franks (57 no) helped them past the 250 mark.

Darren Pattinson removed Liam Dawson to leave Hampshire on 23-1 at the close.

Nottinghamshire started the game with a batting line-up weakened by the departure of overseas batsman Hashim Amla who has joined South Africa's tour of the West Indies.

Mark Wagh, who is taking law exams, was also missing.

And with Tomlinson and Cork bowling well, they looked set for a miserable day as Neil Edwards, Alex Hales, Samit Patel and Bilal Shafayat all went cheaply.

But 40-year-old Brown led the revival, smashing 42 from 46 balls before he was lbw to Sean Ervine.

Mullaney was dropped on 50 as he continued the Notts fightback and looked on course for a century until an edge carried to Nic Pothas off the bowling of David Balcombe.

Franks also enjoyed some luck as he was dropped twice, but the return of Tomlinson with the new ball eventually ended his last-wicket resistance with Darren Pattinson.

On a pitch offering plenty of encouragement for the seamers Pattinson drew an edge from Dawson with an away-swinger to leave the game finely balanced.
