Steven Finn took three wickets as Middlesex dominated on day one against Derbyshire at Lord's.

Finn (3-45) was well supported by Iain O'Brien (2-41) and Tim Murtagh (2-36) as the visitors struggled to 190-9 at the close.

Teenager Chesney Hughes scored a gutsy 41 on his first-class debut to save the visitors from total collapse.

Paul Borrington (46) was the only other Derbyshire batsman to provide any real resistance to the home side's bowlers.

Hughes, a 19-year-old all-rounder from Anguilla, came in at number seven and immediately saw his team lose their sixth wicket to be in deep trouble on 105-6.

After eight overs on nought he began to dig Derbyshire out of trouble with some powerful cover drives.

First with Lee Goddard, and then in a 51-run eighth-wicket stand with Tom Lungley, he ensured Derbyshire reached some sort of respectability at the end of an opening day which began at noon due to the visiting team's overnight travel from Leeds.

Finn had earlier struck the first and most telling blow of the day when he had Chris Rogers, the Derbyshire captain and prolific Australian, caught at first slip by Andrew Strauss with a magnificent delivery that bounced and left the left-hander.
