LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Cardiff: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Northants 253 Glamorgan 3pts, Northants 2pts Match scorecard
James Harris has now taken 19 wickets in the Championship this season |
Huw Waters and James Harris each took three wickets as Glamorgan bowled Northants out for 253 on a seamer-friendly wicket at the Swalec Stadium. But home captain Jamie Dalrymple may be disappointed that Northants scored more than 200 after he won the toss. Painstaking efforts from Stephen Peters (72) and Andrew Hall (53) helped the visitors to respectability. But Harris's late burst enabled Waters to bowl Lee Daggett with the last ball of the day and end Northants' innings. The difficulties that Northants would later encounter did not seem apparent when openers Peters and Niall O'Brien (49) took advantage of some wayward bowling by Harris and David Harrison to add 66 for the first wicket. But Waters, on at first change, had O'Brien brilliantly caught one-handed by Gareth Rees at short leg and then trapped Mal Loye lbw for a duck to reverse the tide. Peters and David Sales (25) added 47 for the third wicket before Sales and Rob White both fell to slip catches off the bowling of Jim Allenby (2-29) and Harris respectively. Peters eventually reached his half-century off 147 balls but was caught as short leg off the spin of Dean Cosker before Hall and Nicky Boje rode their luck to take Northants past 200. Boje was bowled through the gate to start a collapse that saw Northants lose their last five wickets for 40 runs, with Mark Cosgrobe having Hall caught at first slip and Waters and Harris mopping up the tail.
