Kent seamers Matthew Coles and Simon Cook took four wickets apiece to bowl Warwickshire out for 250 on day one of their County Championship clash.

Only Jonathan Trott (67) and Darren Maddy (39) of the Bears' top order fired at Canterbury as they limped past 200 after being put into bat.

But some lusty late-order hitting from Neil Carter (43) helped the visitors to a second batting bonus point.

Kent lost captain Rob Key just before stumps as they closed on 43-1.

It was success at the second time of asking for Warwickshire paceman Chris Woakes, who had Key caught behind after earlier seeing him dropped by Trott at slip.

But Key's late dismissal was a rare disappointment for the Kent captain on a day when he must have been pleased with the job done by his seamers after Maddy and Ian Westwood had shared 51 for the first wicket.

Amjad Khan ended the partnership, having Westwood caught spooning a pull to Sam Northeast at mid-wicket, before taking the catch at long leg off Cook which claimed the prize wicket of England batsman Ian Bell.

Kent continued to take wickets at regular intervals and when 19-year-old Coles, who had come on as fifth change, bowled Trott with one that nipped back on his way to a career-best 4-55, Warwickshire were 203-8.

But Carter, with the help of Imran Tahir (17no), guided the Bears to 250, hitting the innings' only six along the way before being caught behind off Cook, who ended with 4-66.

Kent seamer Matt Coles told BBC Radio Kent:
"It was very nice to get a few wickets and for a bit of luck to go my way for once. Very happy with the result.

"We've done well to peg them back to 250, we possibly could have bowled them out for a bit less.

"But we've just got to keep taking our chances as we have and there's no reason why we can't put ourselves in a strong position for the next innings."
