Carberry made his England Test debut in Bangladesh in the winter |
Michael Carberry hit his second century of the season as Hampshire limped to 300 all out on day one of their match against Nottinghamshire. Carberry was the only batsman to thrive as Hampshire, who have lost five consecutive matches, continued their early-season struggle for form. Seamer Darren Pattinson was the pick of the Notts attack, taking 3-85. But all the visitors' bowlers were among the wickets as no other Hampshire batsman passed 40. Carberry and fellow opener Jimmy Adams appeared to be laying the foundations for a solid total after reaching 40 without loss. But after Adams was caught behind off Paul Franks, the Hampshire innings spluttered to a near standstill in the face of accurate bowling from Franks, Charlie Shreck and Pattinson. Only the impressive Carberry kept the scoreboard ticking over as Shreck picked up the wickets of Chris Benham and Neil McKenzie in quick succession to leave the hosts on 77-3. England Under-19 star James Vince played with confidence in a run-a-ball 39, but his dismissal by Pattinson, swiftly followed by that of Nic Pothas to the same bowler, tilted the initiative back in Nottinghamshire's favour. Carberry remained unmoved, playing with the sort of poise and controlled aggression which deservedly earned him winter international honours. His team-mates, however, continued to flounder, and lower order cameos from Sean Ervine and Dominic Cork were both cut short by the spin of Samit Patel. With his score on 132 Carberry finally let his concentration slip, when Franks had him caught by Mark Wagh. When the impressive Pattinson ended the innings with his third wicket, few would argue the visitors had not enjoyed the better of an intriguing opening day.
