CLYDESDALE BANK 40, Grace Road: Durham 156-4 beat Leicestershire 154-8 by 21 runs (D/L method) Durham 2pts Match scorecard
 Smith's unbeaten half-century came off just 33 deliveries |
Durham overcame the rain to clinch a 21-run Clydesdale Bank 40 victory over Leicestershire on the Duckworth-Lewis method at Grace Road. Batting first, Durham's innings was badly disrupted and they were grateful to 50 not out off 33 balls from Will Smith as they made 156-4 in 26 overs. Leicestershire were set 176 to win but were never in the hunt after losing Jacques du Toit and James Taylor early. They eventually closed on 154-6, Chris Rushworth taking 3-29 for Durham. Opener Will Jefferson made 45 and Wayne White 36 off 22 balls late on for Leicestershire but it was never going to be enough because of their side's steady loss of wickets throughout. After a delayed start, Durham had their innings interrupted by rain having reached 91-2 off 19 overs. And when play resumed, visiting captain Smith took centre stage, hitting four boundaries to help his side set what proved to be a more than competitive target. The victory took Durham top of Group C, but came at a price as seamer Will Gidman joined their growing injury list after hobbling off with a twisted right ankle.
