LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Lord's: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY THREE: Gloucestershire 268 & 223, Middlesex 203 & 167-7 Middlesex 5pts, Gloucestershire 4pts Match scorecard
Gemaal Hussain has previously had a spell with Nottinghamshire |
Bad light denied Gloucestershire the chance to defeat Middlesex inside three days at Lord's. The hosts were 166-7, still 132 short of their victory target of 298 when the gloom prematurely ended proceedings. Earlier the visitors moved from their overnight score of 139-7 to be bowled out for 222, Jon Lewis making 44. Scott Newman (42) and Dawid Malan (60) fought hard for Middlesex, but paceman Gemaal Hussain's 4-36 put Gloucestershire in a winning position. Andrew Strauss had begun the Middlesex chase in positive fashion, pulling Jon Lewis for six, but Lewis would have his revenge when the England captain dragged on to leg stump. | 606: DEBATE |
From 37-1 at lunch, Middlesex slipped to 79-3 when Hussain had both Owais Shah and Newman caught by Alex Gidman at slip. Sam Robson and John Simpson then both fell cheaply but Malan stood tall amongst the carnage, reaching a 79-ball half-century and sharing a sixth-wicket stand of 40 with Gareth Berg (24). But Berg was caught down the leg-side by wicketkeeper Jonathan Batty and, after a first break for bad light, Malan edged behind, both off the bowling of Hussain, to move Gloucestershire towards their first Championship win of the season.
