LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Bristol: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Sussex 152 & 302, Gloucestershire 128 & 12-1 Glos 3pts, Sussex 3pts Match scorecard
Martin-Jenkins is the first man to score a century at Bristol this summer |
Robin Martin-Jenkins hit 102 as Sussex batted themselves into a strong position on day two of their clash with Gloucestershire at Bristol. Martin-Jenkins built on the platform laid by Michael Thornely, who made a battling 64, as Sussex were bowled out for 302 in their second innings. That set the home side 327 to win after both teams had been bowled out cheaply on the opening day. Gloucestershire closed on 12-1, Jon Batty falling to the day's final ball. But the day belonged to Martin-Jenkins, who continued his excellent early-season form with his first Championship century since 2003. The 34-year-old all-rounder had already made 65 and 33 not out against Glamorgan and 64 against Surrey, as well as taking 12 wickets with the ball. He came to the crease with his side 119-5, a lead of 143, and shared 52 with Thornely, who reached his maiden half-century off 132 balls. And he received further valuable support from Joe Anyon and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan in helping set Gloucestershire an unlikely victory target before falling to a tired-looking shot off Steve Kirby (3-54). Gemaal Hussain again impressed with the ball for the hosts in taking 3-66, including the scalp of England Test wicketkeeper Matt Prior.
