Sussex paceman Rana Naved-ul-Hasan celebrates the wicket of Leicestershire batsman Wayne White
Murray Goodwin hit a valuable half century to give Sussex the edge as 17 wickets fell on day one of their clash with Leicestershire at Hove. Rana Naved-ul-Hasan took full advantage of Goodwin's decision to field after winning the toss by taking 4-49 as the Foxes were skittled out for just 114. Sussex were in trouble themselves at 92-5 when Nathan Buck had England's Matt Prior held at gully by Josh Cobb. But Goodwin dug in to end the day on 59 not out, with his side on 213-7. With a lead of 99, Sussex already look in a strong position to claim a fourth successive win, but it could have been different after the Leicestershire attack, without captain and stomach bug victim Matthew Hoggard, bowled their side back into the game. With his side 112-6 after Andrew Hodd was trapped leg before by Buck (3-36) Goodwin used all his experience to add 49 with Robin Martin-Jenkins and then an unbroken 52 for the eighth wicket with Naved (35no). Sussex were given a further boost by the fact that umpires George Sharp and Graham Lloyd were happy with the pitch. Despite the clatter of wickets, they will not be calling in the England and Wales Cricket Board pitch inspector.
