Half-centuries from Nick Compton (73) and James Hildreth (68) helped Somerset to a 38-run win over Glamorgan in their Clydesdale Bank 40 opener in Cardiff.

After David Harrison (3-54) excelled with the new ball, Somerset initially slumped to 38-3, before posting 224-5.

In reply, Glamorgan were indebted to Tom Maynard's 48 to give the home side's score some respectability.

But, with Ben Phillips and Alfonso Thomas both taking three wickets, Glamorgan were bowled out for 186.

Glamorgan stand bottom of the Group A table on -1 points, thanks to last season's left-over punishment for producing a poor pitch in the Friends Provident Trophy tie at Sophia Gardens 11 months ago.

They were originally due to suffer a two-point deduction, but it was halved on appeal last week - and the one point was officially taken off in this game.

Somerset batsman Nick Compton told BBC Somerset:
"I'm chuffed. When you start somewhere new, it's important to get a score particularly early in the season but, more importantly, it's the first game we've won.

"From what I've heard and having played there [at Taunton] a couple of times, it's a lovely wicket. Let's hope we can get in and really get on the board.

"We've won a one-day match, now it's time to win a four-day game."
