LV= COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Chelmsford: Essex 343 & 256 beat Hampshire 354 & 185 by 62 runs Essex 21pts, Hampshire 6pts Match scorecard
 Ryan ten Doeschate (second left) is mobbed by his team-mates after taking the wicket of Hampshire's Danny Briggs
Ryan ten Doeschate struck with the penultimate ball of the match to secure Essex a dramatic 62-run win over Hampshire at Chelmsford. Chasing 248 to win, Hampshire looked set for at least a draw at 170-4. But ten Doeschate took 5-13 in just 5.5 overs, including the match-winning wicket of David Griffths, as Hampshire collapsed to 185 all out. Ten Doeschate had earlier hit 66 not out as Essex were bowled out for 256, Kabir Ali finishing with 5-33. Kabir's spell was, in effect, the key to setting up such a thrilling finale as without it the game would have, in all likelihood, petered out into a draw. At the same time Ten Doeschate's innings, which included a six and 10 fours, proved crucial as Essex added 125 to their overnight 131-4. | 606: DEBATE |
But no one could have predicted the drama that would unfold late in the game as Michael Carberry (47) and Jimmy Adams (45) put on 71 for Hampshire's first wicket. The departure of Adams, caught by a running James Foster off a mis-hit hook, prompted the visitors to stumble to 124-4, but with Chris Benham (24) and Nic Pothas (39) going well and scoring quickly a Hampshire win looked more likely than an Essex one with 78 required from 11 overs with six wickets left. Ten Doeschate had other ideas and had Benham caught behind by Foster to end a stand of 46 with Pothas, a wicket which sparked the beginning of the dramatic finale. Pothas, Kabir and Danny Briggs all followed quickly to the Netherlands all-rounder, who completed victory when he had Griffiths caught at leg slip by David Masters.
