Glamorgan will take a lead of 302 with one second-innings wicket left into the final day of their clash with fellow promotion hopefuls Essex at Cardiff.

Essex began the day on 277-7 hoping to claim a first-innings lead, but could add just 11 more, Mark Pettini making 90 as Dean Cosker finished with 6-91.

Jamie Dalrymple then led the way for Glamorgan with an unbeaten 89 as the home side closed on 279-9.

Danish Kaneria took 3-104 for Essex to complete a 10-wicket match haul.

But it was Cosker who was day's star turn with the ball, taking 3-0 in 13 deliveries to wrap up the Essex innings and finish with career-best figures.

Cosker bowled David Masters in his second over of the day, then broke through the defences of Pettini and Kaneria in successive balls to give Glamorgan a lead of 23.

Graham Napier conceded 10 off his opening over but then hit back by having Mark Cosgrove caught behind.

Gareth Rees and Will Bragg added 59 for the second wicket before Tom Westley's part-time off-spin accounted for Rees to a bat-pad catch.

Westley, who had not taken a Championship wicket this season before this game, struck again in his next over by bowling Michael Powell for a duck.

Masters had Bragg caught behind for 47 to leave Glamorgan 117-4, and Jim Allenby helped add a further 29 before falling to a smart catch by James Foster.

Dalrymple, who went to 50 off 114 balls, then shared the day's main partnership of 71 with Mark Wallace (48).

And although Kaneria removed Wallace, Adam Shantry and Garnett Kruger, Dalrymple was still there at the close.
