COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, The Oval: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Leicestershire 291-4 (Surrey 1pt, Leics 2pts) 31 July - 3 August 2009
Boeta Dippenaar struck 16 fours in his 149-ball 86 |
Leicestershire trio Boeta Dippenaar, HD Ackerman and James Taylor all hit half-centuries to put Surrey on the back foot on day one at The Oval. After opener Matt Boyce was run for a duck, Dippenaar (86) shared 139 for the second wicket with Greg Smith (46). When both men fell to Jade Dernbach (2-54), Ackerman (75) and Taylor shared a fourth-wicket stand of 105. Ackerman fell to Chris Schofield, but Taylor (53 not out) saw the visitors to 291-4 at the close. After the visitors won the toss, Boyce pushed the third ball of the day to Chris Schofield in the covers and was well short of his ground from a direct hit at the bowler's end. Smith and Dippenaar took the score to 107-1 at lunch, but were caught by Stewart Walters and wicketkeeper Jon Batty respectively off the bowling of Dernbach soon after the break. Leicestershire regained control through Ackerman and Taylor, who was brought in to the side as a replacement for contract rebel Jim Allenby. Surrey had to wait for the second new ball for their next success, when Ackerman was caught at slip by Walters off Schofield, leaving Allenby and Tom New (16 not out) to bat through to the end of the day.
