COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Guildford: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Essex 317-7 (Essex 3pts, Surrey 2pts) 15 - 18 July 2009
Ten Doeschate struck 11 fours in his 150-ball 105 not out |
Ryan ten Doeschate struck an unbeaten century to help Essex fight back on day one against Surrey at Guildford. The Dutch international shared stands of 98 with James Foster (48) and 83 with Graham Napier 43 to end the day on 105 not out. Earlier Chris Jordan (3-60) helped reduce the home side to 116-5 after John Maunders (31) and Hashim Amla (26) put on 51 for the second wicket. But ten Doeschate, who struck 11 fours, led Essex to 317-7 at the close. After Stewart Walters, who has become Surrey's fourth captain in as many months, lost the toss and was asked to field, he saw Jade Dernbach trap Varun Chopra leg before for just two. Amla and Maunders then steadied the ship before both fell to Jordan, becoming the first two of wicketkeeper Jonathan Batty's four catches in the process. Mark Pettini was also undone by Batty and Jordan and when Matt Walker became Tim Linley's maiden Championship wicket, the home side were in trouble. But this bought wicketkeeper Foster and ten Doeschate together, and although the all-rounder was dropped twice, the pair added 98 in 22 overs. After Foster carved Andre Nel to Chris Murtagh at gully, Napier struck seven fours in his 84-ball effort before he too was caught by Murtagh, off the bowling of Linley (2-67). But ten Doeschate ploughed on, reaching his first first-class century of the season by pulling Chris Schofield for four.
