Van Jaarsveld's 53 included nine fours and came off 81 balls

Division Two leaders Gloucestershire took control at Beckenham, ending the first day on 69-2 after bowling Kent out for just 231.

Kent started solidly with Martin van Jaarsveld (53) and Geraint Jones (46) leading the way before they both fell to Steve Kirby (2-25).

Justin Kemp's brave knock of 40 then went largely unsupported.

But Kent did fight back with William Porterfield (19) and Hamish Marshall (4) caught at slip before the close.
