COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, The Swalec Stadium: Glamorgan v Northants 16 - 19 June 2009 (Play begins 1100 BST) CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Glamorgan 308 Northants 0-0 (Glamorgan 3pts, Northants 3pts)
Cosgrove's second Championship ton of the summer came off 136 balls |
Mark Cosgrove battled through the pain of a finger injury to make a century on day one of Glamorgan's Championship clash with Northants. Cosgrove was hit by David Wigley on 94 but reached 102 before retiring hurt. He returned following the fall of the ninth wicket after an x-ray revealed no break but did not face a ball as Glamorgan were bowled out for 308. Michael Powell also hit 88 for the home side, while Wigley claimed 5-78 for the visitors, who saw out the final over. Cosgrove, making his final Championship appearance before being replaced as Glamorgan's overseas player by Herschelle Gibbs, dominated the first half of the day and shared a century stand with Powell. That helped the home side recover from 29-2 inside 10 overs after Wigley removed both Gareth Rees and Ben Wright. Cosgrove reached his half-century, his fifth in seven innings, off 73 balls, but was then lucky to survive when David Murphy missed a stumping chance off Monty Panesar when he was on 84. He needed lengthy treatment after being struck by Wigley, but reached three figures via an inside edge for four off the same bowler before returning to the pavilion. His retirement brought in Jamie Darymple, but he soon became Wigley's third victim, caught behind for one. Powell and Mark Wallace added 58 before the wicketkeeper was bowled via a bottom edge off Panesar. Robert Croft hit a whirlwind 43 off 40 balls, but Glamorgan's innings came to a disappointing end as they lost their last four wickets for just two runs.
