Usman Afzaal starred as Surrey won the London derby with holders Middlesex by 57 runs at Lord's to get their Twenty20 Cup campaign off to a flying start.

Together with fellow former England batsman Mark Ramprakash, Afzaal put on an unbroken 139 for the second wicket.

Afzaal hit 98 off just 59 balls, while Middlesex old boy Ramprakash (61 off 45) helped Surrey to 186-1.

Chris Schofield then took 3-21 as the home side ended well short on 129-7, Tyron Henderson top scoring with 32.

Scott Newman had earlier hit two thirds of his 18 in sixes as he helped Afzaal get Surrey off to a flier.

But then Afzaal, with comfortably his Twenty20 best, and Ramprakash, with his customary big score against the county who let him go nine summers ago, really got stuck in.

And, in contrast to their spirited effort as they made a Friends Provident Trophy quarter-final exit at The Rose Bowl on Saturday, Middlesex's weakened batting line-up had little to offer in response.
