FRIENDS PROVIDENT TROPHY, GROUP C, Headingley Surrey 184-7 beat Yorkshire 104 by 63 runs (D/L method)(Surrey 2pts, Yorkshire 0pts)
Chris Schofield picked up 3-16 from nine overs |
A dramatic Yorkshire collapse, in which they lost five wickets for five runs in 28 balls, handed Surrey a shock Friends Provident Trophy win at Headingley. Surrey earned a 63-run Duckworth/Lewis victory, but Yorkshire had only themselves to blame for their demise. Chasing a modest target of 185 in what started out as a 47-over match, Yorkshire were cruising on 63-1. But the leg-spin of Chris Schofield and Grant Elliott's medium pace proved too much as they slumped to 104 all out. After winning the toss, Surrey had made a confident start with a 39-run opening stand in 10 overs between Scott Newman and Michael Brown only to then find themselves in trouble at 82-5. But they were rescued by a brave stand of 67 in 13 overs between Matt Spriegel (56 not out) and Irishman Gary Wilson (34). Their stand ended in unfortunate circumstances when Spriegel produced a fierce drive which struck his partner, Richard Pyrah pouncing on the ball to knock down the stumps with Wilson out of his ground. Schofield (22) then helped Spriegel continue the recovery before being bowled by Ajmal Shahzad off the final ball of the innings. In reply, pinch-hitter Rana Naved-ul-Hasan was going strong on 43 when the arrival of Michael Vaughan slowed his progress. The former England captain denied him the strike as he struggled to make headway. It was Vaughan's 31st delivery before he swept Schofield for his first boundary to move to 10 but he then edged Elliott to keeper Wilson, who had turned out for Ireland the previous day. Skipper Anthony McGrath was lbw in the next over playing across the line at Schofield and, with Rana facing only a dozen balls in 10 overs, Yorkshire were slipping out of the game. The situation worsened when Schofield had Rana caught at slip for 49 and in the next over Elliott dismissed Adil Rashid and Simon Guy with consecutive deliveries as the home side plunged to 83-7. Shahzad survived the hat-trick ball but when rain stopped play at 86 for seven, with 28.1 overs bowled, Yorkshire had fallen well behind the required rate. When play was able to resume in murky conditions, Yorkshire needed an improbable 82 off 4.5 overs to reach their revised target of 168 and were bowled out for 104 in 30.2 overs, Elliott ending with 4-14 from his five overs and former Lancashire spinner Schofield 3-16.
