COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Edgbaston (day four): Warwickshire 315 & 280 bt Glamorgan 193 & 223 by 179 runs Points: Warwicks 20, Glam 3
Division Two champions Warwickshire beat Glamorgan by 179 runs after a remarkable final day at Edgbaston. Glamorgan resumed their quest for 403 on 122-1, but lost three wickets without any addition to the score. A total of seven wickets fell for six runs in 48 balls, teenager Chris Woakes with four wickets in 22 balls to claim a career-best match return of 10-162. David Harrison hit 14 fours in 64 not out but the Bears sealed their first home Championship win for 17 months. Bizarrely it was Warwickshire's first home victory in the four-day game since beating Sussex in April 2007. Woakes finished with 45 first-class scalps, and is the youngest leading wicket-taker in Warwickshire's history. The Bears had five victories, two of which came in the final 11 days, which was the lowest by a Division Two title-winning side in nine season of the two-tier structure. For Glamorgan it was a third successive bottom two finish. The final day start was delayed by a wet outfield but Woakes and Neil Carter quickly made up for lost time with some devastating seam bowling. Tom Maynard and Michael Powell gave catches to wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose in the space of three deliveries in the fourth over. Top-scorer Gareth Rees was caught at second slip for 54 and Woakes took two wickets in two balls before Jason Gillespie, in his farewell appearance, shared 31 with Harrison. The Australian was given a warm reception as he made his way back to the pavilion, and when Adam Shantry was bowled by Carter the major celebrations could begin.
