Unstoppable Chapple derails Kent

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Division One, Liverpool (day three):
Lancashire 107 & 257-7 beat Kent 233 & 92 by 70 runs

Glen Chapple's success was a critical factor in Lancashire's win

Glen Chapple produced a stunning bowling performance as Lancashire moved out of the relegation mire with a come-from-behind win over Kent.

After being bowled out for 107 on day one, and conceding a first-innings lead of 126, the third day dawned with the hosts on 257-7 at Liverpool.

They were finally all out for 288, setting Kent a target of 163 to win.

But Chapple, 34, took 6-40 as he tore through the batting. Kent were all out for 92, losing by 70 runs.

Chapple's remarkable day began with the bat, advancing his overnight 28 to a very useful 45 - a considerable score in the context of the match.

Pakistani Yasir Arafat finished with impressive figures of 4-41 from 14 overs and Kent looked favourites to take a victory which would have put them back in the title race.

But with the way the wicket had been over the first two days you just had the feeling that Lancashire were not out of the game, and that was how it proved.

Oliver Newby began the tumble of wickets when he bowled Joe Denly for a duck in his first over, the Kent opener completing a pair.

Geraint Jones, who made 91 in the first innings, was caught behind by Luke Sutton off the bowling of Chapple, also for a duck though Kent were quick to counter-punch.

Rob Key hit Newby for two consecutive straight boundaries and Martin van Jaarsveld cracked the same bowler for six and four.

But Key soon nicked Chapple behind before Darren Stevens was brilliantly caught by a diving Stuart Law at second slip.

Justin Kemp played an ill-advised cut to be caught at point by Francois du Plessis to give Tom Smith his first wicket and Kent were 38-5 at lunch.

Lancashire suddenly had the upper hand and after the break Chapple trapped danger man Martin van Jaarsveld lbw and elicited inside edges from Yasir Arafat and James Tredwell.

Smith wrapped things up, comprehensively bowling Amjad Khan and removing Ryan McLaren (27) for the 12th lbw of the match.

Amazingly, Kent's catastrophic day saw them thrown out of the title race and instead plunged into a last week relegation scrap.
