Vaughan fails again for Yorkshire

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Division One, Scarborough (day two, close):
Somerset 380 v Yorkshire 121-1

Michael Vaughan
Vaughan has failed four times since returning to play for Yorkshire

Former England captain Michael Vaughan failed with the bat again as Yorkshire chased Somerset's first innings score of 380 in a crucial Division One match.

Vaughan mis-timed a pull shot to mid-on to fall for 14, but Yorkshire recovered to finish on 121-1, with Adam Lyth (55) and Anthony McGrath (50) both unbeaten.

Somerset's total was down in part to a splendid 127 not out from all-rounder Ian Blackwell off 167 balls.

He shared a stand of 99 with Peter Trego (51) as Yorkshire toiled.

The day began with Yorkshire captain Darren Gough, on his 38th birthday, handing out first-team caps to leg-spinner Adil Rashid and left-handed batsman Andrew Gale.

Gough's team, struggling against relegation, soon reduced Somerset - who began on 160-3 - to 167-4 when Arul Suppiah edged Matthew Hoggard (4-42) behind, while James Hildreth nicked Tim Bresnan to first slip for 41.

Somerset were 219-6 when Craig Kieswetter succumbed to Rashid (3-116), but then Blackwell and Trego put them in charge with a terrific partnership.

It ended when Hoggard clean bowled Trego and then trapped Steffan Jones for one, but Blackwell carried on his merry way and reached his century off 137 balls, celebrating by hoisting Rashid for six soon after.

Bresnan (3-78) cleaned up the innings by dismissing Andrew Caddick and Charl Willoughby as all eyes turned to Vaughan and whether he could finally muster a score for his county.

It was not to be as Willoughby got his man, Lyth and McGrath played some glorious strokes to put Yorkshire in a decent position at stumps.
