PRO40 Division One, Kidderminster Middlesex 253-6 (40 ovs) bt Worcestershire 242 (39.4 ovs) by 11 runs
Worcestershire's Pro40 Division One survival will depend on a play-off against Glamorgan after an 11-run defeat by Middlesex at Kidderminster. Middlesex were put in to bat but Barry Godleman (48) and Ed Joyce (99) put on 107 for the first wicket. Worcestershire were made to suffer as Middlesex posted a healthy 253-6 and then reduced the hosts to 61-3. Ben Smith crafted a superb 107 but Dirk Nannes took 4-38 to bowl Worcestershire out for 242 and seal their narrow win. The defeat means Worcestershire will travel to Cardiff on Sunday and Graeme Hick's final appearance in county cricket has been delayed by a further 24 hours. Hick, 42, was only able to contribute 14 runs in an emotional appearance at Chester Road, where he began his career in England in 1984, performing for Kidderminster in the Birmingham League. Earlier, openers Joyce and Godleman notched the Crusaders only three-figure stand for any wicket in the competition this season. Godleman finally departed when he was stumped by Steve Davies off spinner Gareth Batty and Tyron Henderson fell victim to a catch just inside the deep midwicket boundary by Stephen Moore off Daryl Mitchell. Teenage debutant Sam Robson became the 1008th catch in all cricket for Hick before Eoin Morgan was removed by Gareth Andrew and Joyce, backing up, was run out in the same over by a smart pick up and throw from Vikram Solanki. Dawid Malan was then dismissed by a beautifully-judged low catch by Chris Whelan off Andrew. There was no success, however, for Sri Lankan paceman Dilhara Fernando, who finished with figures of 0-43 on his Worcestershire debut. Worcestershire, the 2007 champions, made an uncertain start to their run chase by losing Solanki cheaply before Davies and Moore began to steady the innings. Davies had an escape while on 14 when Joyce was unable to hold on to a sharp one-handed catch at first slip off Tim Murtagh, who quickly recovered to oust Moore. And Davies' luck ran out when he was trapped lbw by Nannes. That brought Hick to the middle to a rapturous standing ovation from the 2,000 crowd and through a guard of honour from the Middlesex players. But, on his final one-day appearance in England, he was not at his best, spending 42 minutes in the middle before hitting Malan's second ball to Morgan at short cover to spark off a second rousing ovation as he made his way back to the pavilion. Smith, who was dropped by Steven Finn on 75, then put on 100 in 14 overs with Mitchell (46) before the latter was stumped by Ben Scott off Murtagh. Smith, whose 107 came off 95 balls, was run out by a fine piece of fielding by Henderson before Andrew, Batty, Whelan and AJ Harris followed in rapid succession to confirm Worcestershire's fate.
