Ambrose ton inspires Bears win

PRO40 Division Two, Derby
Warwickshire 229-5 (40 ovs) bt Derbyshire 200 (36.3 ovs) by 29 runs

England wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose struck an unbeaten century as Warwickshire overcame Derbyshire by 29 runs.

Ambrose fired 10 fours and a six in his 111, sharing 179 with Darren Maddy, a Bears one-day fourth-wicket record, as they posted 229-5 having been put in.

Derbyshire lost three wickets in eight overs in reply, but West Indian Wavell Hinds blasted 84, spinner Ant Botha hit for five sixes in as many overs.

But Ian Salisbury took 4-28 and Hinds fell to a Jonathan Trott full toss.

Ambrose passed 50 for the first time in a one-day match since June 2007 but should have been dismissed on 79, Kevin Dean spilling a chance at short fine-leg off the bowling of Wayne White.

He moved into the 90s by lifting Jon Clare over the square-leg rope, reaching three figures from 99 balls, but lost Maddy who could not clear mid-off.

Rikki Clarke, who was booed on his return to Derby after a brief and ill-fated stint as captain, was caught on the boundary for two off the last ball of the innings.

After such a bad start Derbyshire needed some heroics, and Hinds provided them with his best score for the club.

His third six denting a car roof but Salisbury ended a stand of 53 in eight overs by bowling Jamie Pipe and claimed his best one-day figures in a county match since 1992.
