County Championship Div One: Trent Bridge (day one, close): Nottinghamshire v Somerset 143-7
Nottinghamshire took charge of their top-of-the-table Division One game with Somerset on a rain-interrupted day one. Charlie Shreck removed Somerset skipper Justin Langer, who elected to bat, with the first delivery and Darren Pattinson picked up three victims in 20 balls. Andre Adams then removed Marcus Trescothick and Craig Kieswetter as the visitors reached 143-7 at the close. There were only 48 overs but despite a poor forecast leaders Notts hope there will still be time to push for a win. Despite Trent Bridge's juicy reputation for seam and swing bowlers this season Langer chose to bat after winning the toss. However, he was soon rueing that decision as Shreck produced the perfect in-swinger to trap the Australian lbw first up and pass 50 Championship wickets for the season in the process. After a brief spell from the Pavilion End, Pattinson switched to the Radcliffe Road End and gained immediate reward as Zander de Bruyn was squared up by a swinging delivery. He edged to wicketkeeper Chris Read to give the Notts skipper the first of his four catches. Trescothick had reached 35 when Adams removed his off-stump with a beauty as the left-hander drove at thin air, and Pattinson quickly followed up to send James Hildreth and Wes Durston back to the pavilion. Shreck then returned to claim the wicket of Ian Blackwell lbw in the last over before lunch, and Adams found the edge of Kieswetter's bat after the interval shortly before bad light and rain ended the day.
