NatWest Pro40 D1, Hove: Sussex 185-6 (38.1 overs) bt Lancashire 183 (38.5 overs) by 4 wkts
Goodwin's 58 not out came from 82 balls, with six fours |
Lancashire failed to capitalise on a good start and remained anchored to the bottom of Pro40 Division One after Sussex won by five wickets at Hove. Lou Vincent (50) and Paul Horton (56) helped the visitors reach 102-1 at one stage before Lancashire collapsed. After they were bowled out for 183, Sussex paced their reply well. Although Michael Yardy (48) holed out when well set, Murray Goodwin (58 not out) saw his side home comfortably as they moved to the top of the table. Lancashire's stand-in skipper Glenn Chapple took 3-30 and spinner Gary Keedy (2-38) also bowled well, but former Zimbabwe star Goodwin, who hit six fours, anchored the Sussex innings perfectly as they won with 11 balls remaining. The Red Rose county will rue a disappointing batting display in which they failed to support their two half-centurions, while Sussex spinners Yardy and Chris Nash both grabbed three wickets.
