COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Division One, Canterbury, day four: Kent 283 & 317-4 dec beat Lancashire 125 & 264 by 211 runs Kent 19 pts, Lancashire 3
Off-spinners James Tredwell and Martin van Jaarsveld took three wickets each as Kent wrapped up a 211-run victory over Lancashire at Canterbury. Mark Chilton's five-and a quarter-hour innings of 102 was all in vain as the Red Rose county were all out for 264. Chilton struck 16 fours before he was stumped off Tredwell and the remaining five wickets went down for 37. Dominic Cork was last man out after making 18 off 12 balls, caught by van Jaarsveld off Tredwell, who took 3-76. Having begun the match second from bottom in the table, Kent's win lifted them into fourth place, just 13 points behind leaders Somerset. But they had to work hard for their initial breakthrough after Lancashire began the final day on 161-4 as Chilton and Luke Sutton kept them at bay for 26 overs. Chilton reached his first Championship hundred since June last year by pulling Ryan McLaren for four, but then overbalanced as he tried to sweep Tredwell and keeper Geraint Jones whipped off the bails. Lancashire skipper Stuart Law came out with a runner because of his bad back but only faced three balls before chipping a return catch to Tredwell and departing for nought. Two more wickets went down before lunch, both to van Jaarsveld, with Sutton (34) edging to slip and Glen Chapple (12) picking out Darren Stevens at mid-off. Following the resumption, van Jaarsveld bowled Gary Keedy (four) for figures of 3-18 and then ran round from slip to end Cork's brief flurry, which included a six and two fours.
