Landmark Lumb ton halts Somerset

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP, DIVISION ONE, the Rose Bowl, day two (close):
Hampshire 316, Somerset 41-0

Michael Lumb's first century for Hampshire frustrated Somerset, who closed a rain-affected second day at the Rose Bowl 275 runs adrift at 41-0.

Lumb shared 80 with Sean Ervine, and reached his century with a two off Andy Caddick, before edging the veteran seamer after five hours at the crease.

It was the first ton at the Rose Bowl by a Hants batsman for a year and helped earn a much needed third point.

Marcus Trescothick and Arul Suppiah began a fluent reply before rain came.

It was Lumb's 29th match for Hampshire and his runs were particularly vital in the club's quest to move out of the relegation zone.

Left-arm spinner Ian Blackwell took the first wicket of the day when Liam Dawson was lbw with the score on 146.

Ervine also made his highest score of the season, with 12 fours in his 69, before he was was caught at second slip.

Caddick ousted David Balcombe, spectatcularly caught by a diving Marcus Trescothick at slip.

Blackwell deservedly collected the wicket of skipper Dimitri Mascarenhas, and Charl Willoughby notched his third victim when he removed last man James Tomlinson's leg-stump.

Only 10 overs were possible in the Somerset innings as rain ended play for the day.
