COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Taunton, final day: Somerset 401-3d drew with Surrey 406-9
Mark Ramprakash's 101st first-class century, a magnificent unbeaten 200, was the main feature of the final day of the Championship match at Taunton. The match finished drawn, with Ramprakash reaching 200 right at the end, soon after he had helped bring up Surrey's final bonus batting point. Surrey, 47-1 overnight, ended on 406-9 in reply to Somerset's 401-3 declared. Somerset picked up their final bowling point when Jade Dernbach was caught behind, and took 12 points in all. Surrey collected 10 points, remaining bottom of the table and still hunting their first Championship victory of the season. But the hosts are now in a terrific tussle with Durham and Nottinghamshire for the County Championship pennant. With their two rivals forced to take four points each following a total washout at the Riverside, Somerset closed to within three points of leaders Notts and two of Durham. Notts have played one match more than the other two. On the same day that it was announced Andy Caddick had signed a one-year contract for 2009, the 39-year-old veteran took 5-118, his best return of the season. But it was another veteran, Ramprakash, who took the headlines after a marathon seven-hour effort of concentration in which he did not get as much support from Surrey's out-of-form batsmen as he would have wished. The skipper faced 337 balls and hit 22 fours and two sixes, with only Usman Afzaal (65) providing any significant help.
